Steve Cohen looks on

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is trying to walk back what appeared to be a big admission about his trade deadline plans.

Cohen posted, then deleted, a message on X that seemed to suggest that the Mets are going to be major sellers at the trade deadline. Most interpreted the post that way, but Cohen was adamant that he had meant something different.

“I believe in this team,” Cohen told Andy Martino of SNY. “I believe in the back of the baseball card. It’s way too early to speculate on anything. It’s May 16. I expect to make the playoffs. I know the fan base is frustrated, but it’s still early. We’re still very capable of making the playoffs. I fully expect to make the playoffs.”

Cohen added that he was baffled by the interpretation of his post. That interpretation was likely inevitable, however, since he was replying to a suggestion that the Mets “blow it up” at the deadline.

Cohen has previously had a habit of speaking a bit too candidly on some matters. This may be another case of that, though he appears highly unlikely to change his ways.
