Washington helped turn a transfer into a Heisman Trophy candidate when they landed Michael Penix Jr. ahead of the 2022 season, and they are hoping to repeat that success with a new quarterback next year.
The Huskies are considered the “strong favorite” to land Mississippi State transfer quarterback Will Rogers, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Both Rogers and Mississippi State running back Jo’Quavious Marks are expected to visit Washington this week.
Rogers was a four-year starter at Mississippi State. He is coming off a down season in which he had just 1,626 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, but he put up huge numbers in the late Mike Leach’s air raid offense in the two seasons prior to that. Rogers threw for 8,713 yards, 71 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his sophomore and junior seasons combined.
Washington backup quarterback Dylan Morris entered the transfer portal earlier this week, which is an indication that head coach Kalen DeBoer plans to find a potential starter via the portal.
Washington went undefeated in the regular season and is preparing to face Texas in the College Football Playoff. The Huskies will move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in 2024.
