The Golden State Warriors may be trying to downsize this summer.
Evan Sidery of Forbes reported this week that the Warriors are expected to “actively” shop forward Andrew Wiggins in trade talks this offseason. Sidery adds that the team would like to offload the 29-year-old Wiggins amid the recent emergence of 21-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Wiggins was an All-Star with the Warriors in 2022 and played a vital role during Golden State’s NBA championship later that year as well (as arguably their second-best player behind Steph Curry). But in the last couple of years, Wiggins has experienced a big dip in production along with major struggles with inconsistency (perhaps in part due to personal issues that have caused Wiggins to miss time in both years). In 2023-24, Wiggins posted a career-low 13.2 points per game on mediocre 45/36/75 shooting splits.
It may not be too easy for the Warriors to shed Wiggins as he is at the low point of his value right now and is still owed roughly $85 million over the next three seasons. But there were notable teams who were interested in Wiggins just months ago, and it should be worth it for Golden State to explore the market for him once again.
